Let’s hope your guarantee isn’t Tanneresque.
Love the blog, Sean. Keep up the good work, unlike your fantasy team. |

My god how smug of you... it took to Conner Mcdavid for the Oilers to be relevant again. I really do hope he returns and the Oilers go back to the joke they once were... |

I’m guessing you don’t read too many Tanner blogs? Particularly the ones concerning the Oilers? |

Nah. We have an extremely competent GM unlike your poop show. Shero (frank)ed over that Mickey Mouse organization for years to come. |

You're an idiot, it's not like he was writing in a code or a different language!?!?! He stated quite simply that the fan base "appreciates hockey". Just because the Oilers have not had good teams for nearly 20years hardly means that the fan base wasn't 100% behind the team. Oilers fans are some of the most loyal fans in sports history. When the team was rumoured to be moved...guess what...the FANS and local business owners doled out cash to keep the team.
...meanwhile, people in other cities like Jersey don't even know where the damn arena is.

Sean, this is my favorite blog ever, but I've got some notes.
Oilers still have the 26th best goaltending in the NHL, remain one of the worst managed teams and definitely would add a goalie if they were competent at all.
You should be angry at your favorite team for wasting the primes of two great players, not the guy who pointed it out.
You have pointed out the Oilers record in January, but did you know that during this time they've got a 5v5 save percentage of 92.82% good for 10th in the NHL and (ironically) the exact same as the Coyotes season long total that is good for sixth in the NHL?
The Coyotes have dropped off since Kuemper went down which is obvious since he was rocking the best stats in the league when he was injured.
The Oilers started to do well when they got good goaltending. (No coincidence, but I won't say I told you so).
So I guess the question is: do you think their goaltending from Oct through Dec is real, or do you think their goaltending from Jan 1 to now is real?
Cause if not, all you've done is strengthen my original point.
But then again, we already knew my original point was strong, because how else to explain a team with arguably the two best players in the world on it struggling to be better than the Coyotes, whose roster is OK at best?
Some other notes:
you said this: "One of the reasons the Coyotes have had success this season has been spreading goal scoring through their lineup" which is wrong. The ONLY reason the Coyotes are any good is their goaltending, which I make a point of saying at least twice a week.
(Which as you correctly pointed out, when it went south, so did they).
In fact, they did make good use of their resources, identify this problem and trade for Taylor Hall.
Anyways, while I always appreciate a good jab, I feel like you've only helped me prove my point. I do teach a free class on satire at the Y, Wednesdays at 8PM if you are interested in improving in this field! |

This is good. But this kind of discussion needs to also include reference to the misery of Leaf nation. Leafs win the analytics match almost every game but they give up a ton of goals and lose on the scoreboard. There are some similarities in the Coyotes, Leafs and Oilers. Teams need to play good defense in order to succeed in the NHL of today. Can any of these teams play enough D to make the playoffs, let alone win a round? |

A couple of notes on your notes.
In terms of all scoring, the Oilers were allowed the 13th fewest in October, 20th in November, a horrendous 31st in December, and 4th in January. The question isn't about whether or not October through December is real it is really if December was real. December was a combination of everything going wrong with McDavid and Draisaitl having career worst months on top of everything else bad that happened.
Edmonton's goaltending clearly isn't as good as January suggests but December was the only really egregious issue.
In truth Edmonton is a team with average to occasionally above average goaltending. Anyone who follows this team knows the bigger issue remains the need for top 6 forwards to give Edmonton more than one scoring threat. It isn't a coincidence that when Yamamoto was called up and the Oilers were able to separate McDavid and Draisaitl onto two different lines they had more success. Look at the Ducks who have the best goalie in the league in Gibson, but struggle because they are always playing in their own end. Even an elite goalie will struggle under those conditions.
Hopefully Holland will make the correct assessment and target another forward and continue to move this team in the right direction, Draisaitl and McDavid are both entering their prime now and will be able to play some great hockey for many years still in Edmonton.
As for your satire class I'm afraid I can't make it as I have a fact checking class booked at the same time whose number I would be happy to send to you |

How does the Oilers goaltending rank per month?
I ask, because in the quote above you lump October, November and December together, yet isolate January. That seems kind of odd.
Edit: Never mind. It would appear Sean just answered my question.
Thanks Sean. |

I honestly don't think it's defense - there has been a small link to defense and how goalies play, but not as big as you think. I believe the reason for this is that goalie talent reveals itself in high danger save percentage, but most shots are low danger, and those almost always self-correct to the average, meaning anyone with NHL talent stops the same amount of LD shots, and that bad goals are generally random.
So a team like the Oilers is getting the goaltending you expect. (bad goalies)
A team like Toronto is doing much worse than expected (Andersen stats down across the board)
and a team like Phoenix is doing way better than expected. (Is Kuemper legit?)
Goalies are largely unpredictable and have an outsized affect on games.
The two teams currently leading the NHL In save percentage are Dallas and Columbus, two teams doing way, way better than anyone predicted.
You can also look as Sean did to see the Coyotes (and Islanders) dropping as their .940 % wears off.

Holy (frank), that slays me. Honestly the best comeback in site history.
As to the goalies, I think we can both agree there is a balance in what teams need to be successful, but I really do believe (and I think you'd agree) that Mike Smith is not the guy you currently want to base your season on.

That is one of the meanest things you could say about a person. I do think however that some of what he said did strengthen my argument and that there is an exception to every rule. |
